Hello π friends, it’s good to see you again, we will continue with our discussion “KING DAVID”.
After the death of king Saul and Jonathan, David mourned and lamented for them because he loved Jonathan so much. (2 Samuel 1:17–27). David was anointed king of Judah in Hebron and while Ishbosheth the son of king Saul was made king of Israel (he was 40 years when he becomes king and ruled for two years before his death). There was a battle between Judah and Israel contested at Gibeon....twelve men from Judah verses twelve men from Israel and the twenty four men were killed, the place was named “Field Of Swords”. There was a clashes of power between David’s loyal supporters and those supporting king Saul’s family which go on for a very long time, David continued to gain more territories while king Saul’s family continued to lose more ground. David had six sons in Hebron Amnon, Chileab, Absalom, Adonijah, Shephatiah and Ithream.
After the death of Abber the commander of Israeli army in Hebron, king Ishbosheth was also murdered. The elders of Israel made a sacred alliance with David and made him king over all Israel, he was thirty years and ruled for forty years. He ruled Judah (Hebron) for seven and half years and Israel (Jerusalem) for thirty three years.
King David’s first battle was against the Philistines who came to capture him as soon as they heard he was made king of Israel but the Lord gave David victory over the Philistines. David ordered thirty thousand soldiers to bring the “Covenant Box” to Jerusalem and he had intentions of building a “House For God” (temple) but God spoke to him through a prophet Nathan “one of your sons will become king after your death and he will be responsible in building the temple”. King David was happy knowing his descendants will continue to rule Israel after when he joined his ancestors.
King David ended the control of the Philistines over Israel by attacking and defeating them. The Lord gave him victories over the Moabites, Syria, Edom, Ammonites, Philistia and Amalek. He built military camps in their territories and they became his subjects and pay taxes.
After king David was told about Mephibosheth the grandson of king Saul and son of Jonathan. Mephibosheth was five years old when king Saul and Jonathan died. King David restored everything that belongs to king Saul to Mephibosheth and he dined in the king’s table as one of his sons.
There was a battle against the Ammonites and Jaob was the commander of the Israeli army. Joab leads the battle against the Ammonites and besieged the city Rabbah. King David was on the palace rooftop when he saw a woman named Bathsheba taking her bath in her house. (Uriah was the name of her husband who was in the army). The king sent summons/invite her and made love to her, she becomes pregnant and informed the king. The king sent a message to Jaob asking him to release Uriah to him and it was done as the king commanded. The king asked him, how the battle against the Ammonites was going? The king said to him “go on home and rest a while” and later sent a gifts to his house but Uriah wasn’t pleased and refused to go home but slept with the king’s guards. When the king inquired of his decision, he said “my fellow soldiers were battling, how can I go home to eat, drink and sleep with my wife”? The next day, the king tried getting him drunk but he refused to go home. Then the king sent him back to the battle and sent a message to Jaob through Uriah, commanded Jaob to put Uriah in the frontline where the fight is heaviest so Uriah can die, and the king’s wishes was granted. After the death of Uriah, prophet Nathan came to the palace and said to the king “there were two men who lived in the same town, one was rich while the other was poor. The rich had many cattle and sheep while the poor man had only a treasured lamb. The rich man had a visitor and refused to use any of his abundance of resources to serve his visitor. The rich man overcame the poor man and took his treasured lamb and serve his visitor”. The king was furious about the rich man and said “I swear by the living God, the man who did this ought to die”, and the prophet said to the king “you are the man”. The king said “I have sinned against the Lord “. The prophet said to the king “the Lord had forgiven you and you will not die but the child will die.
After the death of the child, David and Bathsheba had another son named “Solomon” and the Lord loved him so much.
Absalom plots to take over the throne from his father David. Absalom sent messengers to all the tribes in Israel and said to them, “when you hear the sound of the trumpets , shout “Absalom has become king at Hebron”. When king David heard of it, he fled to the wilderness and went to Mount Olives, crying π. The king planted his good friend Hushai in the camp of Absalom, and who deceives Absalom and report back to the king. The king fled as far away as Jordan River and he was pursued by his son Absalom and his men. And finally Absalom was ridding his mule and was passing through under an oak trees, his head was caught by the branches and he died. The king wept for Absalom and wished he died instead of Absalom.
The king returned to Jerusalem with a royal party. As he returned, there was a rebellion from Sheba the son of Bikri from the tribe of Benjamin and he made the Israelites desert king David. He was killed and there was peace in the land. Then king David sang for victory, (2 Samuel 22). The king takes a census which was against the Lord’s command and there was an epidemic in Israel and about seventy thousand people died. The Lord commanded David to build an Altar in Gad and offer fellowship sacrifice. When the people of Gad saw the king and inquired about his visit in their territory, the king said to them, “I am here to buy your threshing place and build an altar for the Lord in Oder to stop the epidemic”, the people of Gad agreed to give the king their threshing place for free including oxen but the king said “I will buy it because I will not offer sacrifices to the Lord my God which cost me nothing”, and he brought it for fifty pieces of silver.
King David was getting older and he got a new wife Abishag from Shunem and she was very beautiful.
Adonijah declared himself king and king David knew nothing about it. The king had made a solemn promise to Bathsheba that Solomon will succeed him as king of Israel. The king ordered prophet Nathan, Zadok and Benaiah to make Solomon ride his mule to Jerusalem and anoint him king and bring him back to sit on his throne. After Solomon becomes king, king David advised him “My time to die has come. Be confident and determined, and do what the LORD your God orders you to do. Obey all his laws and commands, as written in the Law of Moses, so that wherever you go you may prosper in everything you do. If you obey him, the LORD will keep the promise He made when He told me that my descendants would rule Israel as long as they were careful to obey His commands faithfully with all their heart and soul. There is something else. You remember what Joab did to me by killing the two commanders of Israel's armies, Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether. You remember how he murdered them in time of peace in revenge for deaths they had caused in time of war. He killed innocent men and now I bear the responsibility for what he did, and I suffer the consequences. You know what to do; you must not let him die a natural death. But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai from Gilead and take care of them, because they were kind to me when I was fleeing from your brother Absalom. There is also Shimei son of Gera, from the town of Bahurim in Benjamin. He cursed me bitterly the day I went to Mahanaim, but when he met me at the River Jordan, I gave him my solemn promise in the name of the LORD that I would not have him killed. But you must not let him go unpunished. You know what to do, and you must see to it that he is put to death.” (1 Kings 2:2–9).
